Privacy

Setter Books makes printed picture books from photos and a story idea that you give us. That means you trust us with pictures of people you love, often children. This page says exactly what we collect, what we do with it, who else touches it, and how to have it removed. Setter Books is run by NSG LLC, Minnesota, USA.

What we collect

• Your account. Your email address, and your name and profile picture if you sign in with Google. Sign-in is handled by Clerk.
• What you put into a book. The photos you upload, the names, ages and descriptions of the characters, your story idea, and any text you write or edit.
• What we make for you. The story, the character sheets, the paintings, and the print files.
• Orders. The shipping name, address, phone number and email you give at checkout. Card details go straight to Stripe; we never see or store your card number.
• How the site is used. A record of actions such as “a book was started” or “a page was repainted”, tied to your account, so we can see what works and fix what doesn't. These records never contain story text, names or photos. We also use Google Analytics for visit statistics.

What we use it for

To write, paint, print and deliver your book, to take payment, to email you about your order, to keep the service from being abused, and to improve it. That's all. We do not sell your information, we do not use your photos or your book for advertising, and we do not show your book to anyone else.

Who else handles it

We can't make a book alone. These companies process data for us, each only for its part of the job:

• OpenAI writes the story and paints the pictures. Your photos, character details and story idea are sent to OpenAI's API for this. OpenAI's API terms state that data sent through the API is not used to train their models by default.
• Lulu prints and ships the book, so it receives the print files and your shipping details.
• Stripe takes payment.
• Clerk handles sign-in. Resend sends our emails.
• Amazon Web Services stores the photos, paintings and print files. Neon hosts our database and Vercel hosts the site.
• Google provides Google sign-in and Google Analytics.

Where your files live

Photos and paintings are stored privately with Amazon Web Services. They are not reachable from the public web: every picture is served through the site, which checks that you are signed in and that the file is yours before showing it. The printer is given a link to your print files that stops working after a few days. Until a book is paid for, the site only ever shows reduced, watermarked proof copies of the paintings.

Children

Setter Books is for adults. You must be 18 or older to have an account, and we do not knowingly collect information directly from children. Books are often about children, so we ask that you only upload photos of a child if you are that child's parent or guardian, or have their parent or guardian's permission. If you believe a photo of your child was uploaded without permission, write to us and we will remove it.

How long we keep it, and how to delete it

• An unpaid proof stops being viewable 14 days after its last edit.
• You can delete a book or a character from your account at any time. That erases it from the site and erases its photos, paintings and print files from storage straight away. A book with an order still on its way to the printer can be deleted once the order has shipped or been cancelled. We keep the record of the order itself (what was bought, where it went) for our accounts.
• To close your account and erase everything at once, write to hello@setterbooks.com. We will do it within 30 days and confirm when it's done.
• We keep order and payment records for as long as tax and accounting law requires.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us what we hold about you, ask for a copy, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Write to hello@setterbooks.com from the email address on your account. If you are in the EU, the UK or a US state with its own privacy law, those laws may give you further rights, and we will honour them.

Cookies

We use the cookies needed to keep you signed in, and Google Analytics cookies to count visits. We do not use advertising cookies.

Changes

If we change this page in a way that matters, we will email account holders before the change takes effect.
