Privacy

Setter Books is a website where you make a printed picture book of your own from your photos and a story idea. The story and the pictures are made with AI from what you give it, and the book is printed and shipped by a print-on-demand printer. Using it means trusting it with pictures of people you love, often children, so this page says exactly what is collected, what it is used for, who else touches it, and how to have it removed. Setter Books is run by NSG LLC, Minnesota, USA, the “we” on this page.

What we collect

• Your account. Your email address, your name and profile picture if you sign in with Google, and your name if you sign in with Apple. If you choose Apple's Hide My Email, we only ever get the address Apple makes for us, and our emails reach you through Apple. Sign-in is handled by Clerk.
• What you put into a book. The photos you upload, the names, ages and descriptions of the characters, your story idea, and any text you write or edit.
• What is made for your book. The story, the character sheets, the paintings, and the print files.
• Sharing characters. If you share characters with someone, the email address you give for them, which characters you shared, and whether they have signed in to take them. We send that address one email about it (never more than one in twelve hours), from Resend, saying who shared what. The people you share with see those characters' names, details and photos, and your name (or your email address, if we don't have your name). If someone shares characters with you, they see your address as they typed it, whether you have joined, and whether you have stopped receiving characters from them, and nothing else about you. If you stop receiving someone's characters, we keep that choice, and the addresses they used for you, until you change your mind or either account is closed.
• Orders. The shipping name, address, phone number and email you give at checkout. Card details go straight to Stripe; we never see or store your card number.
• How the site is used. A record of actions such as “a book was started” or “a page was repainted”, tied to your account, so we can see what works and fix what doesn't. These records never contain story text, names or photos. We also use Google Analytics for visit statistics.
• Feedback you send us. If you send us a note from the site or through an AI assistant, we keep what you wrote, the kind of note it is, the address of the page you sent it from (the path only), the kind of device and browser (for example “iPhone · Safari”, never more exact than that), and whether you said we may email you about it. Only the people who run Setter Books read it, on our own admin page (we get an email saying a note has arrived, without what it says). It is never sent to OpenAI or shown to anyone else.
• Promo codes. If you use a friends-and-family code, we record which code, which account used it, for which book and order, when, and whether it was used on the site or through an AI assistant, so we can keep to each code's limit and see how the codes are doing. From the order records we keep anyway, we can also see whether that account has bought anything. Using a code does not make us record anything more about your book.

What we use it for

To have your book written, painted, printed and delivered, to take payment, to email you about your order, to keep the service from being abused, and to improve it. That's all. We do not sell your information, we do not use your photos or your book for advertising, and we do not show your book to anyone else, nor your characters to anyone but the people you share them with.

Who else handles it

A book passes through several companies. Each processes data for Setter Books only for its part of the job:

• OpenAI writes the story and paints the pictures. Your photos, character details and story idea are sent to OpenAI's API for this. OpenAI does not use data sent through its API to train its models, and we have not opted in to share it. OpenAI keeps what we send for up to 30 days to check for abuse, then deletes it.
• Lulu prints and ships the book, so it receives the print files and your shipping details.
• Stripe takes payment.
• Clerk handles sign-in. Resend sends our emails.
• Amazon Web Services stores the photos, paintings and print files. Neon hosts our database and Vercel hosts the site.
• Google provides Google sign-in and Google Analytics.
• Apple provides Sign in with Apple, and passes our emails on to you if you hid your address.
• Sentry receives a technical report when something on the site breaks: what failed and where, and your account's id. We strip out what you typed, your cookies and your IP address before a report is sent, and a report carries the name of what failed rather than the words that were being saved, so photos and story text are kept out of it.

Where your files live

Photos and paintings are stored privately with Amazon Web Services. There is no public way in: every picture is served through the site, which checks that you are signed in and that the file is yours (or a photo of a character someone is sharing with you) before showing it. The printer, and your own downloads, are given a temporary link that we issue only after that same check and that stops working shortly afterwards — while it lasts, anyone you pass it on to could open it, so treat it as you would the file itself. Until a book is paid for, the site only ever shows reduced, watermarked preview copies of the paintings.

Connecting an AI assistant

You can connect Setter Books to an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT (here is how). You sign in to Setter Books, through Clerk, and allow it; from then on it can do with your account what you could do on the site, and nothing more. It cannot pay, see card details or upload photos.

What the assistant reads through that connection (your characters' names and descriptions, your story, the pictures it looks at, your orders and any shipping address you give it) goes to the company that makes the assistant, and is handled under your agreement with them rather than this page. The sign-in you allow also gives that company your name, email address and profile picture, as the screen where you allow it says. We send it nothing on our own, only what it asks for. What it does is recorded with your account in the same way as what you do on the site, noting which assistant it was, and never with story text, names or photos. To disconnect it, remove Setter Books from your assistant's connectors.

Some browsers also let an AI agent built into the browser use our pages' tools while you are signed in. That agent works through your own signed-in browser, and what it reads goes to the agent's maker in the same way.

Children

Setter Books is for adults. You must be 18 or older to have an account, and we do not knowingly collect information directly from children. Books are often about children, so we ask that you only upload photos of a child if you are that child's parent or guardian, or have their parent or guardian's permission. If you believe a photo of your child was uploaded without permission, write to us and we will remove it.

How long we keep it, and how to delete it

• An unpaid preview stops being viewable 14 days after its last edit.
• You can delete a book or a character from your account at any time. That erases it from the site and erases its photos, paintings and print files from storage straight away. A book with an order still on its way to the printer can be deleted once the order has shipped or been canceled. We keep the record of the order itself (what was bought, where it went) for our accounts.
• When you stop sharing a character, or delete it, it leaves the characters of everyone you shared it with straight away, and its photos stop opening for them (a browser may still show one it had already opened, for up to an hour). A book they already made with it keeps its pictures and the character's name. Closing your account does the same: such a book keeps the name, and nothing else of yours.
• To close your account and erase everything in it at once, use Delete my account (also under your picture, top right, as “Delete account”). Your books, characters, photos, paintings and print files are erased straight away, and your sign-in with them, and an email confirms it. If you can't sign in, write to hello@setterbooks.com from the address on the account and it will be done within 30 days.
• We keep order and payment records for as long as tax and accounting law requires.
• Feedback is kept until you close your account, and is erased with it. Ask and we will delete a note sooner.
• The record that a promo code was used stays after you close your account, because it still counts toward the code's limit, but it no longer says who used it or for which book. The order it paid for is kept like any other order record.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us what we hold about you, ask for a copy, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Write to hello@setterbooks.com from the email address on your account (if you hid it with Apple, reply to any email we have sent you). If you are in the EU, the UK or a US state with its own privacy law, those laws may give you further rights, and we will honor them.

Cookies

We use the cookies needed to keep you signed in, and Google Analytics cookies to count visits. We do not use advertising cookies.

Changes

If we change this page in a way that matters, we will email account holders before the change takes effect.
